IPI to Hold Annual Congress in the Caribbean for the First Time

As we hope you already know, the 2012 IPI World Congress will be held in Trinidad and Tobago from 23-26 June 2012.

This is the first time that IPI's annual World Congress will be held in the Caribbean. We believe Port of Spain, the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, is the perfect choice for this important occasion. A vibrant, multicultural and cosmopolitan city, Port of Spain is a Caribbean metropolitan hub, while Trinidad and Tobago boasts a free and vibrant media landscape and is a microcosm of everything the Caribbean has to offer.

Together with our partners, the Association of Caribbean Media Workers and the Trinidad & Tobago Publishers & Broadcasters Association, IPI is putting together a programme featuring a roster of world-class speakers and topics that are relevant to your day-to-day work as a journalist, while still related to our core concern: press freedom and freedom of expression.

Under the overall theme, "Media in a Challenging World: A 360 Degree Perspective," the three-day IPI World Congress will examine the many challenges, concerns and opportunities facing the media in the Caribbean, Latin America, and across the world.

Topics to be discussed include:

  • "The State of the State-Owned: A Look at the Role of State-Owned Media in Latin America, the Caribbean, and Beyond"
  • "Rising Tides: The Impact of Natural Disasters on Press Freedom"
  • "Online Media Ethics"
  • "Mexico, Cuba, Venezuela: The Big Three and their Impact on Press Freedom in the Region"
  • "Colonial Legacies - Criminal Defamation in the Caribbean"
  • "New Business Models: What's Working Where"
  • "Manipulating the Media: Government Advertising as a Reward or Punishment for Media Outlets"
  • "Covering Corruption"
  • "Going Beyond Borders: Covering Breaking News in Your Own Backyard and Making Sure Your Story Gets Out to the Rest of the World"
  • "Covering the Environment"
  • "Moving from the Newsroom to the State House: The Journalist as Political Mouthpiece"

In addition, the 2012 IPI World Congress will feature a one-day seminar for reporters covering corruption, a press freedom photo exhibition, and a special awards evening honouring IPI's 2012 Free Media Pioneer and latest World Press Freedom Heroes.
